Unfortunately most KTM rider asking us for a replacement system give us for model only the displacement figure. Such as KTM 125. But this is not good enough as over the years different KTM 125 (for an example) have been built.

What we need (and even this might go wrong due to after market modifications) is the model number. This model number is always encoded in the engine number.
Examples see here and here. (Equally in frame number, but ignition is an engine thing and engines might have been swapped, so check engine number only please!)

You find a KTM type list here, which is to the best of our knowledge and need not be 100% complete and correct!

• the diameter of the base plate (90mm or 110mm)
• what engine side the magneto is mounted
  (right-hand or left-hand seen into driving direction)
• the crank's turning direction (clockwise or anticlockwise by looking at the flywheel face)
• the make (manufacturer) of the original system (Bosch, Motoplat, SEM or other),
  (please have in mind that what you have there might not be the stock system, but a replacement already and there have been changeovers)

Still there is ample room for confusion and error, that makes it truly necessary to look very carefully at what the bike needs before ordering a new system.
