Systems for vintage KTM motorcycles

Unfortunately KTM had choosen to name motorcycles only by engine sizes. As a result, a KTM 125 (for example) can be quite different things. So please do read the following carefully before ordering a  System for your KTM here!

For identification, please watch out for:
The following is based on our experience only and might contain errors. We are gratefull for all information.
  • KTM used at first Bosch and starting 1975 Motoplat magnetos with a base plate diameter of 90mm. This were all clockwise-turning systems (except for 80ccm), mounted at the right-hand engine side. (system 71 28 799 00)

  • Starting from 1985 gradually SEM magnetos have been used.

    magnetos with lighting support
    # 240/250/300ccm systems with lighting support and clockwise turning large rotor with a 90mm base plate (to ease transit from motoplat).  (system 71 21 799 00)
    # 240/250/300ccm systems with lighting support and anticlockwise turning large rotor with  110mm bevelled ground plate, mounted at the left-hand engine side (system 71 86 799 00)

magnetos without lighting support (SEM Type KC)
    # 110 mm base and anticlockwise-turning small rotor mounted at the left-hand engine side (system 71 35 799 00)
    # 110 mm base and clockwise-turning small rotor mounted at the right-hand engine side (system 71 93 799 00)

  • Between 1993 and 1997 KTM manufactured the MX with PVL dynamos.

  • Since 1997 KTM uses Kokosan magnetos, also with a 110mm base plate.

All in all, a very confusing situation, that makes it truly necessary to look very carefully at what the bike needs before ordering a new system. We have done our very best to list the motorcycles by year of manufacture and basic features of the ignition system (make and base plate diameter). But there is plenty of room for misunderstandings and errors.

So please, before ordering, do check with us in detail what you need.
